Search Federal BOP Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons after a Westmoreland County connection, use the federal locator rather than the county jail roster or Pennsylvania state system. No BOP institution was identified inside Westmoreland County. The federal system still matters when a defendant enters BOP custody after a federal sentence. Its public locator can show a release date and a released status for many historical records, but that status covers BOP custody only. A complete federal release check must distinguish BOP from temporary U.S. Marshals custody, federal supervision, immigration custody, and any separate state or county hold.

Federal BOP Release System

The Federal Bureau of Prisons manages people committed to federal prison after sentence. It is a nationwide system, not a Westmoreland County facility. No BOP institution was found within the county in the research sweep. A federal case may still originate in or involve a county resident, and a defendant can move from a local or contract holding site into BOP custody after commitment.

The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. It can return current custody information and historical rows for many former federal prisoners. That makes it different from Westmoreland County's current-only adult roster and the PA DOC locator focused on current state jurisdiction or supervision.

Read Federal BOP Release Results

A BOP result can show name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location or status. A historical row marked Released or Not in BOP Custody means the person is no longer held by the Bureau of Prisons. It does not establish that every government authority released the person.

The release date may also change while the sentence is active. BOP warns that dates can be revised during sentence recalculation, including changes related to First Step Act credits. A future date should be treated as the agency's current calculation rather than a promise. The displayed record should be rechecked near the event, and the actual release should be confirmed when timing matters.

System limit: “Released” means released from BOP custody, not necessarily free from state, county, immigration, or supervision obligations.

If the person moves to another custodian, identify the receiving system. If the person begins federal supervised release, confinement has ended but a court-ordered supervision term may continue. The locator is not a substitute for the sentencing judgment or supervision record.

Note: Record the register number because it distinguishes the federal record from a similar name in county or state systems.

Federal Releases and Westmoreland County

A person in Westmoreland County Prison may be held for another authority. If a name disappears from the county current-inmate page and the underlying case is federal, the event can be transfer to USMS or later BOP custody rather than community release. The county release or transfer entry should identify the end of the local booking and, when releasable, the destination.

Search BOP only after there is reason to think the person entered that system. A federal defendant held by USMS before sentence may not yet have the kind of BOP record expected after commitment. The U.S. Marshals prisoner information explains that USMS manages many defendants from court-ordered custody until acquittal or release, or delivery to BOP.

No public USMS historical release locator comparable to BOP was identified. For a federal pretrial case, use the federal docket, actual holding facility, and relevant Marshals district. For the Westmoreland County leg of the event, request the local transfer record. The broader Westmoreland County released-person workflow helps identify the system before a locator is chosen.

Westmoreland County's Open Records Request route can seek that local entry. The county's Public Record Searches page confirms that its prison search is current-only, so it cannot replace the federal locator or a historical county transfer record.

Federal BOP Release Court Records

The federal sentencing judgment provides the legal term, while BOP calculates and administers the confinement record. A court order does not prove that facility staff completed a release at the same moment. It can, however, explain a sentence correction, reduced term, acquittal, or other event that changes the legal basis for custody.

For a person not yet committed to BOP, the federal docket may be the most durable public route. Pair it with the actual holding facility and USMS contact. Once BOP custody begins, use the register number to connect the court case to the federal prison record. Do not substitute the Westmoreland County UJS docket for a federal case, although a separate state or county matter can coexist.

Supervised release is imposed by the federal court and follows confinement. A BOP release date does not show that the full federal sentence has ended. The appropriate probation office and court record control that later supervision question.

Request Federal BOP Release Records

The public locator is often enough to establish that BOP reports a historical release date, but a disputed or detailed question may require an agency record. Identify the person by full legal name, register number, and approximate custody period. Ask for an existing sentence-status or release record rather than asking staff to perform a new calculation or certify facts outside an existing document.

The BOP locator records explanation describes the locator's coverage and limits. BOP records and federal court records answer different parts of the question. The agency record can show BOP status and release data, while the judgment explains the sentence imposed.

If a Westmoreland County booking preceded the federal transfer, request that county booking's destination separately. One agency should not be asked to reconstruct another agency's custody event.

Federal BOP Release to Other Custody

A BOP release can end with transfer rather than return to the community. ICE may assume civil immigration custody. A state or county warrant can lead to another agency's custody. A writ or pending matter may also affect the destination. The BOP row alone may not display the full handoff.

When another custody system is possible, search that system with its own identifiers. ICE's locator uses an A-number and country of birth, or exact biographical information. PA DOC uses a state inmate/parole number or name. Westmoreland County uses the county booking number. Each identifier points to a separate legal custody episode.

The clearest wording names the agency and event: BOP lists the federal person as released on its date, while another agency separately reports current custody. Avoid the broader statement that the person is free unless every relevant route has been confirmed.

Note: A transfer closes one agency's custody record while another custody record may begin the same day.

Federal BOP Release Search Limits

A no-result can reflect name variation, identifier error, a record outside the locator's general 1982-to-present scope, or a person who never entered BOP custody. It can also mean the defendant remains with USMS or another holding authority. Recheck the legal name and number before reaching a conclusion.

The locator should not be used for someone released directly from Westmoreland County Prison or a Pennsylvania state institution. Those systems maintain their own records. Likewise, BOP has no dependable public mugshot path in the research, and USMS generally does not release prisoner photos. A photograph found elsewhere cannot establish federal release.

A released federal row can also outlive later changes elsewhere. A new county case, state hold, or immigration action will not necessarily appear in BOP's historical line. Check the jurisdiction tied to the current question instead of treating the federal row as a universal status. For older BOP custody, retain the date and exact wording of the locator result, then seek the agency record when the historical release date or destination is disputed.

The best federal verification chain is the BOP result, federal docket, agency release record, and any receiving-custody record. Keep the search date with the result because current locations and projected dates can change.
